N-Acetyl Cysteine is a derivative of the amino acid L-cysteine, and is a crucial precursor in the formation of the antioxidant glutathione.  N-Acetyl Cysteine boosts glutathione levels.

Glutathione (GSH) is the predominant water-soluble antioxidant in cells.  Virtually all cells require glutathione for viability and function.  Glutathione scavenges destructive free radical, and neutralizes hydrogen peroxide.  Blood glutathione levels decline with age.
